mild steel, 600 X 600mm, 2012
John Hogan’s career in hand forged ironwork started in 1998 as a student at the Irish school of Blacksmithing. He trained under Elmer Roush (Master Blacksmith USA), Henry Profret (Blacksmith UK) and Paul Devlin (Blacksmith Ireland). John completed the course with a distinction in Blacksmithing. As part of the course John travelled to the UK where he worked for Master Blacksmith Bill Corduroy at his Forge in Norfolk. He then worked for 5 years at Bushy Park Ironworks in Dublin. While in Dublin, he worked on many large scale projects including grand gates for Birr Castle, restoration work on railings at Trinity College, as well as many bespoke iron staircases and gates for private clients. He left Bushy Park in 2004 and set up his own workshop in Co. Mayo in 2005.
Now in operation for over 10 years he has accumulated a large portfolio of work which includes bespoke pieces such as hand forged traditional gates and metal staircases. A large proportion of John’s work is in restoration. Over the last 10 years he has restored a beautiful Turner Conservatory, cast iron spiral staircases as well as many wrought iron gates and railings.
As well as the ironwork restoration and the functional ironwork John also makes artistic ironwork which includes: large scale public sculptures, garden sculptures as well as smaller wall sculptures and presentation pieces.
John works in a number of different metals including mild steel, stainless steel, wrought iron, copper and bronze and continues to work with interior designers, garden designers, architects, conservation officers and some of the biggest building companies in Ireland.
