John McKeag

John McKeag graduated in 1988 with a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art (Painting) at Medlock Fine Art Centre, Manchester Polytechnic. Following this he moved to London where he completed a Diploma in Ceramics at Wandsworth College, London, 1993-1995. During this time he also spent a brief period assisting the potter Lisa Hammond at her studio in Greenwich, London.

He returned to Belfast and in 1999 and completed the “Craftworks” pottery skills course which was based in Derry. On completion of the course he worked as a freelance production thrower for a number of years before setting up his own business. In 2005 he was accepted onto the Craft N.I. “Making It ” programme and took up a placement at the Clotworthy Arts Centre, Antrim. He remained as Artist in Residence at the Clotworthy Arts Centre for eight years where he was able to spend time developing his work. He has recently set up a new studio in Belfast and exhibits regularly.

  • My work has changed direction over recent years with less emphasis on repetitive production of tableware ranges to work, which explores more artistic concerns. Inspiration and ideas can come from anywhere but mostly they emerge through the material and the act of making. Essentially I am a vessel maker interested in form, line, surface and the space a pot occupies and contains. I work intuitively with these elements to produce work that connects with me, feels complete and has a sculptural simplicity and presence. One pot follows on from another with new discoveries ahead.
