Kathleen Moroney
Kathleen Moroney creates ceramic sculptures and installations, incorporating wood, glass, found objects and elements of moving image. Moroney’s practice is motivated by narrative, process and materials. The essence of an idea first appears through the repetitive act of rendering numbers of identical clay forms. In this way, concept and process evolve together, and the idea is translated into a visual language and brought to life.
Her recent work includes Anchored, an installation composed of a series of white porcelain birds and a 100-year-old cartwheel, connected with white silk cords. For Moroney, the interaction of form, space and gravity play a fundamental role in the realisation of this kind of work. The overall significance of an installation is contingent on its location and spatial possibilities, so that the idea continues to unfold in time and space.
Moroney graduated from Limerick College of Art and Design in 1995 with a BA in Ceramics, and went on to complete a Research Masters degree in Ceramics in 1998. She is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD through the University of Sunderland, UK.
