Kathleen Standen

Kathleen Standen was born in London. She studied Marine Biology at Bangor University, North Wales and pursued a career in teaching. Having had a lifelong interest in ceramics Kathleen retired from teaching and enrolled in a degree course in ceramics at the London Metropolitan University, graduating in 2005.

Kathleen now makes her vessels at her studio in Leap, Co. Cork,  using coloured porcelain clay with organic additions. The ever changing patterns of weather together with rock strata, moving and still water, and wild flowers are just some of the influences which are reflected in the textures, colours and glazes.  However, the tools of trade used in the fishing industry such as floats, buoys and winches, can also be seen in the forms, thereby combining utility and beauty. Her work encompasses small sculptures and vessels in addition to large sculptures for display in gardens.
