Locker 13 is the collaboration of designers Karl Medcalf and Shane Wilson, specialising in furniture, lighting and homewares. Medcalf and Wilson share a passion for original design and innovative use of found and recycled materials. They cite numerous and varied inspirations, and strive to resist the influence of trends in furniture design in order to create original, unique furniture.
Current work includes the Allsort range of stools built from layers of salvaged materials such as acrylic, plywood, lino, foamex, felt, hardboard and fabric, with legs made from staircase spindles. Each piece is unique, in line with the construction process, and can be made to a colour specification. The distinct character of each piece comes from its particulr combination of colours and textures – proving that sometimes more is more.
Work is either produced entirely in the workshop or sub-contracted to expert craftspeople to work on particular aspects of the design. Medcalf and Wilson see this process as a vital part of their practice. They source local materials and makers, and place a high value on face to face Interaction, which they see as an essential part of the joy and quality of their work.
Medcalf and Wilson graduated with degrees in Industrial Design from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1999. Locker 13 was launched in 2009.
