Louise Rice

Louise Rice produces delicate and lifelike sculptural glass objects with a strong narrative element, often combined or juxtaposed with found objects and other materials.

Rice’s current work, As You Are We, explores the complexity of human relationships in terms of the encounter with oneself and others. Sparring Partners is a reflection on interpersonal conflict and fragility that takes the form of a pair of mould-blown glass boxing gloves. Another key work from the series, Conversation Pieces is a set of interconnected glass speech-bubbles inspired by questions of communication and expression.

Rice uses a range of hot and warm techniques to produce her pieces. One of these is the pate-de-verre method, in which a thin glass paste is used, enabling her to achieve the precise and minute detail of her objects.

Rice graduated in 1998 with a BA from Edinburgh College of Art, and went on to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Glass 2000. She continued her studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, finishing in 2003. Originally from Co. Armagh, Rice now lives and works in Leitrim.
