Solines Series

In this current work, Bethani has developed a new range of glazes that offer more expressive rocky textures. The finish is matt and the colors are rich, while the black clay contrasts smoothly underneath. Inspiration is drawn from many disparate sources including natural landscape.

Magda Bethani

Magda Bethani was born and raised in Athens, one of the world’s oldest and most influential cultural and artistic cities. She previously worked in the business sector whilst studying “European Civilization” at the Greek Open University. In 2009 she started experimenting with the creative potential of clay. In 2012 she applied for and was accepted onto the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland’s Ceramics Skills and Design Course. She graduated in July 2014, having successfully exhibited her work at the National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny and the Blue Egg Gallery, Wexford. She was also awarded the Lewis Glucksman Gallery Graduate Award, in 2014.

Magda’s work is defined by on-going exploration into new forms, surfaces and processes. The starting point is always the potter’s wheel, where she creates both functional ware and sculptural pieces. Smooth curves and gentle colour in her earlier work have now developed into strong forms with simple lines, bright bubbly glazes and expressive textures. Deep iron black clay breaks through the surface, contrasting the rich coloured glazes. Her inspiration comes from many sources, ranging from natural landscape to found objects and ancient artefacts. The intention is for the work to carry a sense of these ancient artifacts while at the same time maintaining a contemporary, fresh look.  Magda often combines other materials with ceramic such as wood, stone and slate
