Muriel Beckett makes unique and contemporary hand wovenwall hangings and floor rugs. Having spent time studying in Finland, Beckett developed a great admiration for the simplicity and clarity of Scandinavian design. She strives to incorporate this aesthetic in her practice, using clean lines, and repeating patterns and shapes.
Beckett’s work is inspired by the colours and contours of the landscape, as observed while walking the coast and mountains of Wicklow and the west of Ireland. She mixes and blends fine cotton and linen yarns before combining them on the loom in various structures, such as twills, plain weaves and inlay.
Beckett studied at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art and Design and later at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. She is based in Wicklow, and works mainly to commission.
