Patricia Murphy

Patricia Murphy creates contemporary wall-hangings and rugs in silks, cottons and other textiles.  Her work is centred on theories and properties of colour, exploring strong colours in particular, for their inherent properties of light and energy, and their relationship to nature and time.

Murphy’s compositions play with complementary and contrasting shades. She sets softly blurring colour fields against hard outlines and shapes to create distinctive abstract pieces, designed to generate energy and excitement in the viewer. Murphy continually experiments with method, developing her own mixed-media processes using dye, pigments, and elements of collage to build up multiple layers. She works mostly with silk for its vibrant and reflective qualities, which bring an intense luminosity to her colour compositions.

Patricia Murphy attended the National College of Art and Design in Dublin where she studied painting, print and textiles.
