Peter Fulop
Peter Fulop produces delicate and expressive vessels in ash-glazed porcelain. His work is influenced by the Japanese clay tradition, specifically the Raku reduction method and wood firing techniques. Fulop’s current work is a culmination of his experiences with traditional artists in China and Japan, influenced by studies in calligraphic painting and martial arts.
Fulop’s work aims to represent movement in space on two or three dimensional surfaces. Inspired by the strong historic link between the sword and the brush, his practice is informed by the importance of the brush-stroke as a synthesis of motion and emotion. The artist begins with the stroke, emptying his mind in line with the continuous action to create marks on the clay. Fulop applies a micron layer of glaze to the surface, enhancing the brushstrokes with a holographic effect.
Fulop’s recent practice sees a shift in emphasis from the production of functional objects to a reflection on the vessel, as ceremonial container and primal symbol of the human body. Fulop aspires to reconnect with this symbolism and reawaken a fundamental consciousness of the vessel form.
Fulop studied at the School of Ceramic Studies in Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary, finishing in 1987, and undertook further studies at studios in the UK, Ireland and Japan. He lives and works in Co.Leitrim.
