Rory Shearer

My work is entirely wheel based and intentionally functional. I enjoy all aspects of the making process and relish the continued challenge that the firing imposes on all of us who venture into the realm of smoke and flame.

I am drawn to the multi-layered surfaces that my rural environment displays throughout the seasons and also the impact farmers and their livestock have on the land. My use of slips/metal oxide washes/Shino glaze and various mark making techniques are my response to this sense of place.

I hope that my pots are used, comfortable to hold and fit for purpose.

Materials and processes / technical information:

I use a lightly grogged Stoneware clay and a fine Porcelain, which is fired in a reduction atmosphere to Cone 10 flat (1300C). The kilns are either gas or wood fired and I make all my own glazes. Currently I am concentrating on Celadon and Shino as my primary choices.
