Jane Seymour

Jane Seymour is in constant amazement that such a soft malleable material as clay, turns into, through the various processes something so unyielding, and yet smoke firing her coil built vessels gives them a sense of fluidity, softness and movement, reminiscent of cloud formations.

For her large decorative bowls she works from life drawing studies, inscribing freehand into the unfired clay. Attracted to the beauty and vulnerability of the naked human form, the clay is a canva to illustrate her designs painting with stains and oxides to bring in colour. The re-application of oxides and slip between firings gives a depth to the work.

In 1994 Jane moved to Co. Clare, Ireland, where she built a house and an art studio. She is inspired by the rugged landscapes and wild nature of the West of Ireland, and much of her spare time is spent observing and sketching her surroundings; the shape of sea washed rocks, the behaviour of crows, and her interest in the human figure, which she sometimes merges into mythical.
