Kate O’Kelly

Kate O’Kelly graduated from NCAD in 2013 with a first class honours degree and an MA in Ceramics. She went on to complete a four month residency with the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke on Trent, where her work was exhibited as part of the 2013 biennial. In 2014 she received the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland’s Future Makers Innovation Award along with the Future Makers overall award.

Kate is inspired by the solitude of the rural Irish countryside near Annamoe, Co. Wicklow and her grandmother’s eclectic Georgian house which was filled to the brim with beautifully crafted objects from around the world. Her work manifests as surreal hybrid objects that reference the visual environments of her childhood. Her work is playful and evocative, engaging the viewer with a sense of familiarity and wonder. The pieces are made using a combination of found objects and digitally produced forms. Combining traditional craft methods with industrial processes, the work embraces classical elements and modern features of design through both its style and technique. She has been investigating new processes for model making which include 3D modelling, printing and the use of industrial CNC machinery.
